8 Ways Getting a Job Has Changed In The Last Decade

8 Ways Getting a Job Has Changed In The Last Decade8 Ways Getting a Job Has Changed In The Last Decade The job market is perpetually evolving, which means if youve been happily employed for the past decade, its safe to say that things are different now. The way people look for jobs, the interview process and what employers look for are all slightly different now, although your time-tested job hunting and interviewing skills will still serve you well. To help you navigate unterstellung changes, Glassdoor is hosting a free livestream on Wednesday, April 25th from 6-7 PM PT. Read on to get a sneak peek at some of the major wayssearching for a job has changed in the past ten years, plus how you can work these shifts to your advantage.Sure, online job postings were around ten years ago, but job sites have evolved in some major ways. In addition to having a greater volume of postings available online, you can now filter your search - not just for basics like job title a nd location, but also for salary ranges, date of posting and company size - using tools like Glassdoors job search feature . These filters allow you to avoid wasting time sifting through job descriptions that arent relevant to you, so you can make the most of your job hunting time.2017 was a prime year for whistleblowing at major corporations. While this might not seem relevant to job hunting, the spirit of transparency absolutely crosses over into this arena. According to Glassdoors Whats Ahead for Jobs? Five Disruptions to Watch in 2018 report, its likely that mora companies will begin to implement transparent hiring practices in order to allow potential hires to feel mora clued in during the hiring process. Johnson & Johnson is one of the first companies to make this kind of system a reality, using a new hiring platform that allows candidates to track their application from start to finish, suggests next steps and provides helpful information about the company and role.Of co urse, this also means that transparency is expected from candidates, who should be prepared to talk about their reasons for seeking a new job and the challenges theyve encountered in past roles. And while embellishing your resume was never exactly encouraged, its an especially poor moment to try that tactic given todays climate.Another major trend noted in the disruptions report is that recruiters are especially looking for candidates who have researched the company and are well-informed about the role and the industry theyre applying to work in. One Glassdoor survey found that employers prioritized informed candidates above all others, and that being a high-quality candidate essentially means being an informed one. How does this translate? Use your application and resume to show how much you know about your industry and the job roles youre applying for, and youre more likely to see heightened interest in your applications.Yes, its really that easy. That means you can work on your job hunt while youre standing in line at the grocery store or during your train commute. Five minutes here and there really add up, so this can work to your advantage if youre searching for a job but have limited free time.If you have your profile complete on Glassdoor, for example, you can utilize the Easy Apply feature, which allows you to submit an application without leaving the site or even uploading additional documents - a feature that isnt available on all job sites. And research suggests that mobile job searching willbe even hotter in the years to come. One 2015 Pew Research survey found that 28 percent of Americans have used their mobile phone for job searching. When updating your resume, its important to include not just the names of where youve worked and what your job titles have been, but also keywords that highlight your actual skills. Not only does this help recruiters pinpoint what you can actually do , but it also increases the chances of your resume making it to an actual humans eyes when you apply for a job online. Many large companies utilize resume-scanning software that searches for keywords pertinent to each role, only passing the most relevant resumes along to HR for further review.Plus, if there are skills you use in your job now that you enjoy using, you can use those as keywords for your job searches. This way, you might be able to find jobs with titles you hadnt imagined for yourself, but in reality are a great fit for what youre interested in doing next. You might think that the only way to find a new job these days is to become a computer whiz. Its true that Glassdoors 2018 disruptions report found that healthcare and tech jobs are steadily increasing. If you work in either of those industries, youll have plenty to choose from in terms of potential roles. These trends probably arent too surprising, but whats especially promising for job hunters in 2018 is that more traditional job roles (think construction laborers, rest aurant waiters and truck drivers) are also in higher demand. While a decade ago it looked like computers, the internet and AI would make traditional job roles redundant , theyre actually on the rise. The takeaway? Dont let a lack of technical skills discourage you from looking for something new.You may have already experienced that annual wertmiger zuwachs reviews are becoming less popular, with many companies choosing to do away with them entirely. Now, many businesses are opting to encourage feedback on a more frequent basis through regular check-ins and structured learning opportunities. Once you make it to the interview stage, showing youre comfortable with receiving feedback, learning new skills and making changes to the way you work based on your organizations current needs can set you apart from the rest of the candidate pool.Another rising trend, according to Glassdoors disruption report, is role experimentation programs. While only a few companies have formal programs th at allow current employees to try out a completely new job role and eventually transition over to that role full-time (provided its a good fit), its expected that more will become keen on the idea. Research shows that one of the key reasons people leave their jobs is that their role no longer fits their skills or interests, and businesses are wising up to the fact that in order to keep their most talented employees - who naturally want to grow and change in their roles - theyll have to be a little more flexible. If your company doesnt have a formal program for career changers, check in with your HR department about what company policy on the matter is. You might be surprised by how open they are to role-switching.

Why You Really Dont Need to Go Above and Beyond

Why You Really Dont Need to Go Above and BeyondWhy You Really Dont Need to Go Above and BeyondRemember that time you turned in an assignment days ahead of your deadline? Or when you brought in coffee and donuts for your team meeting, when everyone was expecting you to only bring coffee? What about the night you worked until 10 PM, even though youd only promised to stay until 6?I hate to break it to you, but no one cared. According to a new study in the journal Social Psychological and Personality Science, researchers found that exceeding promises reaps little benefits over simply keeping them. Break them, though, and youll suffer the consequences. Theres no value in knowing that someone is extra-fair, says study co-author Ayelet Gneezy, an associate prof at the University of California San Diegos Rady School of Management. If were thinking about social systems and how our world operates, all we really need to know is whether the person is reliable or bedrngnis, or trustworthy or not. Anything more is near negligible, she says. To come to this conclusion, Gneezy and a colleague at the University of Chicago conducted three experiments testing peoples reactions to promises. The first asked participants to predict how theyd feel if a hypothetical promise- in this case, a friend offering to edit a term paper and provide feedback- was kept, broken, or exceeded. The second asked study subjects to reflect on promises made to them in the past. And the third set up situations in which participants made promises to each other, and then were instructed to stay true to their word, fall short, or go above and beyond. Overall, the researchers found that not only did promise receivers overlook exceeders extra efforts, but they also attributed those efforts to outside influences- not good nature. Whatevers provided for me by you doing a bit more, you probably had nothing to do with that, its not diagnostic of your character any more than simply keeping your promise, Gneezy says . Whereas falling short of promises- that is an obvious result. In other words, when you turned in that assignment early, your supervisor figured you were off to a hot date. When you brought the unexpected donuts, your colleagues assumed Dunkin Donuts had a special. The night you worked late, your boss suspected you didnt have internet access at home. But had you missed your deadline, forgotten to bring the coffee, or left work early? Theyd all be more apt to consider you an untrustworthy person. So, what does this mean for you?For one, keep the promises you make. If that means making fewer promises- something Gneezy has vowed to do- so be it. Breaking them will hurt more than not making them in the first place. Next, go the extra mile only if you want to- not because you expect people to be cheering after you cross the finish line. Better yet, upgrade your promises say, by telling your boss outright that youll submit the assignment a day early or by offering to bring the coffee and the donuts when the duties are first divvied. In other words, dont under-promise and over-deliver, rather promise and deliver. Achieving is the new overachieving. Finally, give yourself a break. Theres something about the extra that I think is very consuming for us as individuals and very demanding, Gneezy says. That energy can be spent elsewhere- a passion project, a relationship, or even a renewed commitment to get more sleep- with little loss to others perceptions of your original pursuit. Put simply, be who you say you are and do what you say youll do, Gneezy says. It decreases anxiety on all sides, it makes things much simpler. Its a better social system for everyone.Photo of man with rocket ship courtesy of Shutterstock.

Position your Staffing Company and Clients for Compliance

Position your Staffing Company and Clients for CompliancePosition your Staffing Company and Clients for CompliancePosition your Staffing Company and Clients for Compliance RossheimLike employers in many industries, staffing firms and their clients are unsure what to expect as President Trump and the GOP-led Congress contemplate how to act on their campaign pledges to reserve more U.S. jobs for American citizens.Despite these uncertainties, its prudent for staffing firms to take action now to examine, and if necessary, beef up compliance with I-9 employment eligibility verification, H-1B and other work visas and related issues. That said, many of the changes in labor law and regulation that the chief executive and Congress are considering would take months or years to enact and implement. Federal regulatory processes often require comment periods, for example. Its also unclear how the new administration will navigate potential conflicts between the interests of its populist and corporat e constituencies.Trumps past would indicate a more pro-business mindset when it comes to visas, says Jeffrey Bell, an immigration attorney and shareholder at Polsinelli. Hes used visa workers for a number of his businesses. Here are key points for staffing firms that seek a firm foundation for compliance related to employment of foreign nationals in 2017 and beyond.Gaps in I-9 compliance are common. I-9 seems like a relatively simple form, but countless employers verification procedures fall short.Companies know they have gaps in their I-9 programs, says John Fay, vice president and general counsel at LawLogix, which sells immigration-status compliance software. I guarantee if employers do a self-audit they will find all kinds of problems they werent aware of.When to audit I-9 compliance? Now.Now is the right time for staffing firms to examine their own I-9 processes and to urge their clients to do sospecially with the revised Form I-9, which must be used beginning Jan. 22, 2017.Thi s is the time to start on your internal I-9 audit so your documents are in order you know where everything is and the expiration dates on your workers visas, says Lynsey Foreman, an HR consultant with staffing firm Employer Flexible. The revised I-9 comes with 15 pages of instructions. Note that the form contains some additional data fields also note the rule changes regarding which fields can be left blank, for example.A Federal I-9 audit is serious business. Staffing firms and other employers should assume federal auditors will use a fine-toothed comb on I-9 records. Theres been a steady stream of audits since 2009, and some employers who employ unauthorized workers try to make things a bit fuzzy by using a staffing agency, Fay says.Careless I-9 processes can create discrimination claims. In their employment eligibility procedures, staffing firms and other employers must take care to avoid actions that could be deemed discriminatory. There has been a huge increase in the number of I -9 discrimination cases, says Fay. The I-9 form says you cant discriminate, and you cant ask lawful permanent residents to show me your green card. That makes it critically important for staffing firms and their clients to train all relevant workers to follow the I-9 forms instructions. The same goes for the Labor Condition Application for H-1B visas.Visa workers are an important talent pool for staffing firms. Staffing firms should also undertake an audit of their compliance with H-1B visa rules and their vulnerability to potential reductions in available work visas. Those staffing firms supplying H-1B workers are a little bit nervous, says Barry Asin, president of Staffing Industry Analysts.Employers are trimming plans to hire foreign nationals. For staffing firms and their clients, the strongest defense against the potential curtailment of work visas is to reduce dependency on them.Since President Trump welches elected, our clients are taking significant measures to stop or minimi ze their hiring of visa holders, says Ashwin Bharath, COO of Revature, a software and staffing firm.Revature boosts its own technical recruiting with a 12-week software engineering development program for recent college grads who have shown potential to work in technology. This training program does not accept applications from students who would require visa sponsorship to work.Visa restrictions could drive up wages. Curtailment of work visas could induce sticker shock for staffing clients now is the time to begin educating them.If there are further restrictions on H-1B, it will increase wages for software engineers, says Joe Vacca, chief marketing officer at Revature. The complexities of compliance could create business for staffing firms. On the bright side, a greater emphasis on compliance for firms that employ foreign nationals could increase the attractiveness of staffing solutions.Anything that makes things more complex and puts more burden on employers is likely to bring busi ness to staffing firms, says Asin.

When to Decline an Offer

When to Decline an OfferWhen to Decline an OfferYour career is as driven by what you say no to as it is by what you agree to. Find out who you are, and who you arent in this self-assessment.Great organizations are defined by what they say no to. The same is true for great individual careers.A great career is defined by what the individual is able to put in and get out She can make the type of contribution she finds optimal for her talents, passions and values, and she can reap the type of results she wants. To achieve such a career, you need to say yes to a few key jobs and say no to many attractive alternatives. How to know whats a noWhats up with Abraham Lincoln? There have been literally hundreds and hundreds of books written about him. These include the most introductory of childrens books to the most sophisticated histories. Why did he have such a memorable career? I think it all comes down to the fact that he dedicated his career to two aussages United we stand, and divided we f all and, All men are created equal. What is the aussage to which you are dedicating your professional life? This will help you a great deal in deciphering what to do and what not to do in your career.More than 12 years ago, I dedicated my professional life to this proposition Mastering business basics drives better sustainable results. Not quite as catchy or life-changing as Lincolns propositions, but its been clear enough to help me make decisions on what to do and what not to do.The best contribution I can make is to uncover these business basics, these processes for improving results in a sustainable way, and then explain them in a user-friendly manner. In other words, I see myself as a teacher. Not a teacher who has all the answers because there are no set answers in business, but rather a teacher who causes people to focus on understanding and executing the basics of business at a very high level. In choosing to be a teacher, I simultaneously chose not to be a manager or an execu tive. Before reading on, take out a sheet of paper. Decide on the proposition to which you are willing to dedicate yourself. Write it down. You may end up rewriting it many times over the months to come. With a clear proposition in hand, you can then decide where to place your time and where not to place your time.Your proposition will help you choose which roles you will want to fill - and which ones you wont.Sacrifices and opportunity costsMy third-grade son, Ben, came home with his folder of papers. One of them said, Explain the idea of opportunity costs using the example of Pizza Hut. Ben smiled and said, Thats easy. I like sausage pizza, and I like pepperoni pizza. If I choose the pepperoni pizza, my opportunity cost is the sausage pizza. What a great explanation He learned something valuable that day from Mrs. Edwards. When you choose to have something that means you are also choosing not to have something else.As you go about building a great career, always take the time to clarify your opportunity costs, the things you are choosing not to have. If you choose to work as an employee, you are choosing not to be an entrepreneur. If you choose to be an entrepreneur, you are choosing not to work for someone else. Both choices can be good, but you cant have both simultaneously.Fifteen years ago, I was considering starting my own business. I was a full-time, tenured teacher at a very well-known high school in St. Louis. I wrote down my opportunity costs if I left, which included the following R eally wonderful students would no longer just show up for me to teach, I would not have colleagues to bond with between classes or at lunchtime, I would not have a guaranteed paycheck every month or a guaranteed job for life. To me that was a lot of opportunity costs to give up.Only once I became comfortable with what I was giving up was I able to go out on my own. However, once I left I didnt go back and try to teach at the high school while trying to run my own busine ss.I know people who did just the opposite. They were entrepreneurs and chose to teach or to work for someone else. They had considered their own opportunity costs of not running their own businesses, and they chose to work inside an organization. You have to choose what you think is the best route for your career. Step back and clarify what you will do and why you will do it and what you wont do and why you wont do it.You have to choose your opportunity costs as much as, and maybe mora than, your opportunities.Take out a second sheet of paper and write down all the things you are not going to get as a result of going in the direction you are considering. Make sure you are comfortable with what you are giving up before you get comfortable with what you are going after. The choices of Charlie RoseCharlie Rose is my favorite interviewer. I knew who he was, but I didnt really study him until I recently read an article about him in Fortunemagazine. The proposition to which Charlie Rose ha s dedicated his career wanting viewers to feel like they were eavesdropping on a conversation each night fully engaged if not actually participating. He chose toHone his craft over a number of years until he got the opportunity to doThe Charlie Rose Show on PBS in 1991.He chose not toStay with commercial TV.He had walked away from a well-paying program called Personalities in 1990 because he wanted to do a more serious talk show. He also said no to a full-time anchor slot on Sixty Minutes II in 1996 that would have earned him a great deal more than he makes on his own show on PBS. He turned it down because he felt doing his own show was, as he said, the chance to find your own reality for yourself, not for others, what no man can ever know. In the end, I have not finished the journey. In saying no to a variety of opportunities, Charlie Rose defined who he was and who he wanted to become. He wants to do serious interviews with people on important topics without any pretense whatsoev er. And he does it very well.Accept who you arentAt the same time youre defining where youre going, you must get comfortable with the ideas of limitations and consequences. You can spend your whole life trying to be everything and keep chasing one career dream after another. Or you can say, Ive chosen this path for my career. Here is the general path where I believe I can make my greatest contribution. And then be OK operating within the limitations and consequences of the career you have chosen. Actually, theres real power in deciding the limitations you are going to accept. It means you are willing to focus seriously on the work you have chosen to pursue. In studying hundreds of really successful people, Ive noticed that the best of the best stick with their chosen path. Whats Steven Spielberg doing these days? He is still making movies. Whats Oprah doing now that shes made billions? Still interviewing people to find out what they have to offer her audiences. Whats Steve Jobs up to ? Hes working on guiding Apple to make electronic technology incredibly useful for consumers. What is Charlie Rose doing tonight? Now 67, hes interviewing one of the worlds movers and shakers. Now that Bruce Springsteen has turned 60, whats he doing? Putting on great concerts. Whats my mom doing today at the age of 80? Shes still being a great stay-at-home mom as she has been for the past 54 years and caring for other people.Be OK with who you are and who you are not.To manifest a great career, you have to stick to the path of your own choosing and not feel bad about all the paths you have chosen not to pursue. In reality, the more you consciously say no to alternative paths, the more sincerely you say yes to your lifes work.

#8220;Leaning In#8221; to the Job Search

8220Leaning In8221 to the Job Search Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg is the woman of the hour after releasing her new book, Lean In. The book has been touted as a manifesto for women, as well as anybody in a leadership position that is looking for a leg up to the next rung of the corporate ladder. And as you can imagine, it has been quite controversial. Do women, especially, make decisions that will erode their ability to lead in the workplace? Do these decisions whether conscious or unconscious extend into the job search?Lean In presents a compelling argument for making deliberate decisions at work to ensure future success. Below are some tips on how to apply this philosophy to your job searchPlay to win. Its been said that you cannot win the lottery if you dont play your numbers. Similarly, you wont be offered your dream job if the companys hiring managers do not know that you exist. When you see an opportunity that interests you, even if you do not have every single one of the listed qualifications, applyExplore your options. Rather than seeking to climb the corporate ladder, explore it. The workplace is becoming increasingly focused on diversification. Writers have become designers and programmers singers are actors and designers marketing professionals are public speakers and tech geeks. Those who make it to the top diversify, and looking outside the box for your next job may allow you to use your skills in a new and engaging way.Dont plan too far ahead. Its easy to plan your entire career before youve even graduated from school five years as an assistant, three years in middle management, and from then on . . . world domination. Instead, embrace the opportunities in front of you and dont worry about how it may affect your life ten years down the road. If you find a job you like, go for it.Share your success. Hiring managers dont know your job history, so youll need to e nlighten them when the time for an interview comes. Dont be afraid to share your contributions and achievements, especially how these have impacted the bottom line at previous companies.Be honest with yourself. It is important to be honest on your resume, but it may be even more important for job seekers to be honest with themselves especially about their skills and abilities. If you have poor written communication skills, for example, practice writing every day and invest in tools to help you check your work and increase your accuracy. Think about starting a blog.Your career is a reflection of your professional accomplishments. In a similar way, the choices that you make in your job search are a reflection of your ambition, your sense of personal motivation, and your future career aspirations. Hiring managers are looking for someone who aims high, is open to new opportunities, and is grounded. So, take initiative. Lean in to the job search and success will follow.
